GRIHA standing for Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment is the Green accreditation system devised to suit Indian condition. It has set quantifiable benchmarks against which one can measure the environmental performance of a building over its entire life cycle. It was set up by TERI (The Energy Research Institute) in the year 2007 and works in tandem with Environment Clearance and ECBC codes. The system evaluates new buildings and is assessed based on its predicted performance over its entire life cycle – inception through operation. GRIHA focuses on assessment of the three life-cycle stages (i)pre-construction stage, (ii) building planning and construction stage and (iii) building operation and maintenance stage. GRIHA assess a building out of 34 criteria and awards points on a scale of 100 wherein to qualify for the certification, a project must achieve at least 50 points. All the buildings typologies except for industrial complexes are eligible for certification under GRIHA. ADaRSH (Association for Development and Research of Sustainable Habitats) renders requisite assistance for registration. In order to register, a project can apply on their website which is then followed up with a three-tier process. At the onset, a preliminary evaluation report is prepared by Adarsh which fetches the project a provisional GRIHA rating. The rating criteria varies from Site planning, utilization of site resources, water and waste management, energy audit and building operations, innovation, health and well being of users etc. Following are the GRIHA variants for different types of projects- 1. GRIHA – building certification 2. SVAGRIHA – small scale projects 3. GRIHA for Affordable housing 4. GRIHA for Existing buildings 5. GRIHA for day schools 6. GRIHA for large developments (campuses) 7. GRIHA for cities It is an Indianized Green rating system which focuses on contextuality and local conditions of a site and helps in making a building sustainable while being able to meet all functional requirements at its best capacity.
